How it works

Two ways in. One story.

Build yours, in life

Start with the shape: born, grew up, worked, loved. Add a memory when it comes to you. Invite your family to fill in the years you forgot. Name a trusted contact who will look after it when you cannot.

Build one for someone you love

After a death, four shoeboxes of photographs and a hundred half-remembered stories. Drop the photos in; Afterbook reads the dates and puts them on the timeline. Ask everyone who knew them to add what they remember. You decide what becomes part of the story.

Five steps

  1. 1

    Create a profile

Name, dates, a photograph, a line they would have said.

  2. 2

    Collect memories

Photos, words and recordings, each on the day, month or year it belongs to.

  3. 3

    Share with family

Invite contributors. Approve what they add, or let them post freely.

  4. 4

    Leave a condolence

Visitors can write a few words for the family, kept with the Afterbook.

  5. 5

    Light a candle

Anyone can light one, once a day. If you're not signed in, you confirm it by email with a free account.

What we promise about your photographs

Your original photographs are kept exactly as you gave them, byte for byte. They are never resized for storage. Everything you add is kept in the UK and EU, never used to train anything and never sold.

Who can see what

An Afterbook starts private. You can open it to the people you invite and later to the world. Contributors' memories wait for your approval unless you say otherwise. Every visitor sees only what the curator has published.

Afterbook Families

Tag an Afterbook to the club, school, regiment or workplace it belonged to. Once it is published and shown in Explore, it appears on that family's wall too, with the family's own history running alongside the timeline.
